69% engg seats vacant in Punjab after 1st round of counselling

Over 69% engineering seats in Punjab remained vacant after first round of the joint online counselling conducted by the Punjab Technical University (PTU).
As many as 10146 out of 32789 seats were allotted to the applicants on the basis of their performance in All India Engineering

Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Interestingly, only 11676 students filled the choices for allotment of seats, thus, indicating a downward trend amongst the students on pursue engineering as a career in the state at least.

7907 out of a total of 30306 engineering seats in PTU affiliated Colleges (26%) were allotted in the first round of joint counselling while 1145 students were admitted to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar followed by Punjabi University, Patiala (1050 seats) and Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana (44 seats).

The final round of the counselling would start on July 13 while the results would be made public on July 20, dean (academics) Buta Singh said. After second round, the vacant seats of all categories would be converted into management quota seats for allotment by the colleges concerned as per prescribed norms.

Singh said that the decline in admissions in various disciplines of engineering was also witnessed last year. “Besides, the exact number of vacant engineering seats will be available after filling management quota seats,” he said, adding that the university has also envisaged a plan to attract students from other states.

He said that 1047 students were admitted under tuition fee waiver scheme in 106 PTU affiliated Colleges.

Sources maintained that mushrooming of large number of engineering colleges in Punjab during the past one decade was responsible for such a high percentage of vacant B. Tech programme seats. The approach of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and state government in “liberally” granting permission to open engineering colleges without assessing their need at grass root level has also come under scanner.

“The delivery of quality education and placement records of the colleges concerned are the main parameters for a student to apply for a particular college during counselling. The Colleges too need to strengthen themselves on these parameters in this competitive education market,” a senior PTU functionary said, seeking anonymity.

Meanwhile, the computer science and engineering (CSE) stream has emerged as top favourite discipline amongst the students, as 2656 seats were allotted in comparison to the second most sought after steam- electronics and communication engineering (2088 seats).

The girls, however, dominated the proceedings by bagging top position in seat allocation in three out of four universities. While Simran Kaur (8473 ranked in AIEEE) bagged the first seat in CSE discipline at GNDU’s main campus, it was 13389th ranked Deepika Singh, who was first amongst the PTU affiliated colleges to get a call in CSE stream of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. Similarly, Ankita (15459 ranked) was first to get a computer engineering seat allotted in Punjabi University, Patiala. In Agriculture engineering stream at PAU, Ludhiana, Pulkit Bhutani (27387 rank) managed to secure pride of the boys.

Why IIT-JEE should not be scrapped

Why IIT-JEE should not be scrapped

The major concerns about the entrance examinations for admissions to engineering colleges are multiplicity of tests (leading to stress?), a flourishing coaching industry which is not affordable for the poor, and the complete ignorance of school by students. But unfortunately, the new format, introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, is aimed at solving none of them.

First of all, I would like to ask our Minister which survey or report suggests that a multiplicity of examinations causes more stress.

Till now, for seeking admission to a Centrally-funded government institution, a student has two opportunities — IIT-JEE and AIEEE. One of my friends failed her IIT-JEE examination (in 2009), could not make it to an IIT, but got a three- digit rank in AIEEE (among 12 lakh students) and a two-digit rank in DCE (for the Delhi College of Engineering). Did multiplicity reduce or increase her stress? Had there been just one examination, her career would have been doomed.

The new format will combine the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE, and hence admissions to all Central government-funded institutions (the IITs, the NITs, the IIITs) will take place through this new examination, which means a student has got just one opportunity to perform, leading to more stress.

But what about private colleges? The new format says the entrance examinations for private colleges like BITS, VIT, Manipal , Symbiosis, etc., would continue.

The private colleges charge not less than Rs 1,000 for their entrance test, a huge source of income for them. But the new format has done nothing about it. It is clear that the government is selling the country a myth of “one nation one test.”

Rather than running after coaching institutes to shut them down, the government should have done some retrospection. Coaching is nothing but a form of tuition. A tutor is required only when our existing systems fail to deliver.

Nowadays, students, as early as in Standard IV, go for tuition, because our schooling has perhaps failed miserably. Lack of teachers and basic facilities like toilets and water, to name a few. Will our honourable Minister ban all these tuitions too?

When you have to select 5,000 out of 12 lakh students, the standard of the examination will definitely be tough. Had the school education been efficient and sufficient, there would not have been any need for coaching at all.

With the issue of coaching the government is worried for the 95 per cent who do not make it to the IITs.

But what will the new format do?

With the new format in place, a parallel coaching industry would flourish, promising excellent results in board examinations as well. In fact, a few coaching centres have already started 2-in-1 study packages.

A sincere effort could have been made, starting with a screening test in Standard XI itself, to be conducted by the IITs, which would filter the students and keep a check on the coaching industry, which makes false promises to students as well as parents, and keeps minting money for two consecutive years.

In Standard XII Boards, for physics and chemistry, 30 out of 100 marks are awarded for practicals (laboratory performance), the sole criterion of which is “impression on teachers.” If you were the favourite student, you got 30/30, and the range of marks would be 25-30.

What is the point of increasing the “importance of boards” when a significant number of board examinations are based on an indifferent syllabus, and a teaching style that discourages analytical skills and creative thinking and actually promotes rote learning?

In the IIT-JEE merit list, one mark is equivalent to 100 ranks — i.e., with a difference of one mark, a difference of 100 ranks occurs. Such is the high competence level of the IIT-JEE. Now imagine a student securing a better rank, by 500 points, just because the school teacher gave him 30/30 in the practicals. What a joke! Imagine the quality of students who would be entering the IITs.

What logic suggests that we inject something that is plagued by different kinds of unfair practices (board exams) — paper leaks, mass copying, corruption, schedule glitches and revaluations — into an entrance system that is currently working without these influences?

With 42 board examinations in the country, I fail to understand how the normalisation process will be done. In one board, 70% could be 95 percentile, while in another, 85% could be 90 percentile.

Hence, the IIT-JEE should not be scrapped at all, and instead of imposing his own “creative ideas,” our Minister should initiate wider consultations with all stakeholders of the IITs — professors, students and the alumni — to find solutions.

AIEEE exam: No ‘right’ answers on website has students in a fix

AIEEE exam: No ‘right’ answers on website has students in a fix

CHANDIGARH: Even as the Central Board of Secondary Education has uploaded the OMR answersheet of each student, who had appeared in AIEEE offline exam, on its website, the absence of right answers on it has left many candidates baffled. As, ‘right’ answers uploaded by various coaching centres across the country on their websites vary.

“In IIT-JEE too, the answer keys were uploaded that helped resolve some goofs. With various coaching centres uploading different ‘right’ answers, it has caused much confusion among candidates,” said Sangeeta Khanna, who runs a coaching institute in Sector 24.

Divankar Sharma, who gave the offline exam, said, “I am still not clear about the right answers.”

Rashmi Sehgal, who too wrote the offline exam, said, “The board should have given the answers, so that we know about our performance.” The answersheets have been uploaded to enable students to challenge the board in case any of the answers differ from the one they marked during the offline test.

Online examination candidates do not have the option.

The scanned images of answersheets can be checked on its website www.cbse.nic.in and www.aieee.nic.in. If a candidate wants to challenge the uploaded answersheets, he can submit an application at any of the CBSE regional offices or at AIEEE unit at Patparganj, Delhi-92, on or before June 6 till 12 noon, along with the prescribed fees of Rs 500 per recorded response challenged.

Things you need to know about AIEEE

Things you need to know about AIEEE

AIEEE is conducted for admission to a number of Government & Private colleges in India. AIEEE is abbreviated as All India Engineering Entrance Examination which is arranged by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. The exam helps students to secure their admission and seats in their desired colleges or institutes. This national level competitive exam is held in April and this year the date for the examination was 29th April. Almost 12 lakh candidates appeared for this exam this year.

With the growing number of aspiring engineers every year, it is expected that the number of appearing candidates will rise every year for this examination. AIEEE results are usually announced on the last week of May or the commencing week of June of the respective year. This national level competitive exam is used to secure seats for various undergraduate architecture and engineering courses in the respective colleges where the AIEEE result is considered to be one of the eligibility criteria.

The AIEEE exam consists of two papers which includes paper 1 to test the candidate’s knowledge on mathematics, chemistry and physics, while the paper 2 contains questions which tests the candidate’s knowledge on mathematics, drawing and aptitude. The examinee scores a negative mark if he/she answers the question incorrectly. The syllabus for the examination is very common to every board of education in India and the portion which has been taught to the students in their 12 years of schooling. AIEEE paper 1 and paper 2 is set up for those students who wish to choose B.Tech or B.E courses or B.Arch or B.Planning courses respectively.

Preparation is required to attempt the questions of this exam. It is said that the exam is not difficult as IIT JEE, but not as easy that one could break the records easily. One still needs to prepare so much to get a good enough All India Rank (AIR) that will help one to break through either NIT’s or IIT’s.

It is perfectly said that practice makes a man perfect. Practicing a lot of sample papers will help one to cope better with the real examination situation. It is always advised to use your own methods and tricks to get through or solve a problem.

Accuracy and time are the two most important elements to succeed AIEEE. Use of log tables and calculators are not allowed in the examination, so managing yourself with the time is very important as one cannot implement any short cut. It is said that NCERT books are the bible for the candidates who appear for this exam, as AIEEE is called to be the baby of CBSE. So it is time to achieve accuracy and compete with time to get through the examination.
